(Vegetarian/health Foods) (Specialty Food Store) (Bakery/sweets)

Credit Cards • Outdoor Patio • Vegetarian Food • Wireless Internet

Meals Served: Breakfast • Brunch • Lunch • Dinner

Winners of Best Vegetarian in our Readers’ Choice Restaurant Poll several years running, Annapurna is one of the only places in town with an entire menu devoted to vegan and vegetarian cuisine, and it shows. The food is satisfying but never heavy and, well, you just feel better after you eat there. The lunch special is a good bet with a spicy Indian soup, rice, wheat-free chapatis (flat bread) and your choice of a vegetable entrée for about eight bucks. Then pick up a bag of fragrant house-made vegan cookies and pop ’em until they’re gone.

Need a pick-me-up? How about some real ice cream? We admit it. We’re suckers for Ben and Jerry’s knack for blending the right flavors with just the right amount of gooey, crunchy, salty chunks. Take home a pint or two for your own chunky monkey at home.

7001 Lomas NE 265-7731

(Bakery/sweets) (Specialty Food Store) (Organic/locally Grown)

As you’re already well-aware, Buffett's Candies is home to the largest candy cane this side of the Mississippi. (Admit it, you’ve always wanted to pop in and see if it’s got melon-sized bonbons to boot.) All the candies are made fresh, with real butter, cream and sugar, and if there are piñons in it, you can be sure they came from New Mexico.

Cake Fetish

2665 Louisiana NE 883-0670

(Bakery/sweets) (Specialty Food Store)

Credit Cards • Vegetarian Food

Meals Served: Breakfast • Lunch

Cake Fetish is a boutique bakery with a singular passion for cupcakes (it won Best Cupcakes in the 2007 Best of Burque Restaurants Poll). Not only that, the shop makes teeny, tiny cupcakes. Dense, two-bite buttons of cake, so you can comfortably troll through 30 flavor concepts like "Velvet Elvis," red-velvet cake with cream cheese icing; or minty, dark-chocolate grasshopper, mounded with fluffy French buttercream. This is one instance where you can have your cake and eat it, too. Regular-sized cupcakes also available.

Collectabili Tea

7101 Menaul #C 884-0505 • $$

(Coffee/tea/espresso) (Specialty Food Store) (Bakery/sweets)

Meals Served: Lunch

Having lunch here is kinda like having tea time with Grammy and Aunt Netta, minus the bourbon and cigarettes. There is an astounding collection of fine imported teas, available by the cup, pot or loose to take home, and even though the daily menu is modest, it is seriously gourmet. The house scones are always the same—cranberry almond and lemon apricot—but after you try them, you’ll see why. And if antiques are your thing, they’ve got ’em in the front and the back. They also sell on consignment with available space, so call them for details.

Winner of Best Cupcakes in our 2008 restaurant poll. With a rotating baking schedule of 32 cake and frosting combos, this place is bound to have a cupcake that calls to you. The “Monkeybutter” (banana cake topped with butterscotch butter cream) will have you swinging from a tree with its moist crumb and lightly flavored icing, as will the flufly cream cheese frosting on the red velvet, the triple-dose coconut and the adorable "Bun Bun" (chocolate cake topped with baby-pink marshmallow and shredded coconut). Everything is baked from scratch and nothing less than real butter gets mixed into the frosting. Small tables and coffee complete the feel.

After a hiatus, Dagmar’s has come back to us in a new Northeast Heights location! Whether it’s a full German breakfast with jagerschnitzel the size of a baby’s arm, German rye bread and späetzle , or a big honkin’ breakfast burrito, the food here is large, affordable and fantastic. If warm apple strudel is one of your favorite things, then you're in luck—Dagmar’s has that in abundance, too. Winner of Best Other National Cuisine in the 2007 restaurant poll.

Fremont’s Fine Foods

1100 San Mateo NE 792-DINE • $$

(Deli/sandwiches) (Specialty Food Store) (Take Out/to-go)

Credit Cards • Outdoor Patio • Vegetarian Food

Meals Served: Lunch

Fremont’s is good for a lot more than shopping for obscure imported groceries and fine teas. Its location (in the lower level of the Courtyards at Lomas and San Mateo) has a lovely patio space and professional kitchen. You can choose from a small lunch menu of sandwiches and salads like the Fremont’s chef: a small mountain of field greens piled high with grape tomatoes, baby carrots, crisp shards of seedy lavosh, rolled deli meat slices, Swiss cheese, egg and avocado. If you opt for a sandwich, make sure it’s on the house-made honey whole wheat bread. Then pick up some lovely imported candy bars and other sweets for dessert.

Meals Served: Breakfast • Lunch • Dinner

Shopping in Old Town can be an exercise in restraint, but feel free to splurge on a snack at Golden Crown Panadería. Have a fat, fruit-stuffed empanada or a flaky dessert flauta. And if you want biscochitos, these are so good they were featured on the Food Network and in Gourmet magazine. For the more savory eats, try the green chile bread, loaded with tomatoes, cheese and onions, or a fresh bakery pizza. Yes, GW does pizza, too. And coffee drinks.

6251 Riverside Plaza NW, Suite B-4 922-1155 • $

Meals Served: Lunch

Get a little taste of the farm right here in the city. Hannah and Nate’s is a country gift shop and a lunch café, so come in for a portabello salad and some potpourri, or a spinach salad and some ceramics. The sandwiches are as stuffed as the handmade pillows, and the prices are down-home and hospitable. And all you rebel sickies out there, tip the servers, not the cows.

Meals Served: Lunch • Dinner

Voted Best Indian in the 2005 Readers’ Choice Poll. Indulge in the lavish lunch buffet, or go for dinner when you’ll have a more relaxed meal with great service and an icy cold beer. There’s nothing like a steaming plate of saag paneer to wash those blues away; but if that doesn’t work, head next door to the gift shop for some uplifting Bollywood videos and posters.

Meals Served: Lunch

This mother-daughter bakery specializes in special occasion cakes, some boxed lunches and a suprisingly large selection of mini-cupcakes filled with ethereal creams, berries and other unexpected delights. The cupcakes look less than perfect, but everything else is down pat—the flavors and textures are just how we like ’em and among the very best we’ve had.
