Mardi Gras in December

MarchFourth Marching Band

Portland's MarchFourth Marching Band sprang from the tradition of New Orleans' street bands. They don't don elaborately beaded and feathered costumes like the Mardi Gras Indians, but their show promises to be a festive, celebratory and wholly collective experience. Driven by electric bass, guitar and vocals, MarchFourth's catalog takes the listener down bayou way and across the ocean to an Eastern European gypsy camp. The act may stop to rest in a rowdy Brazilian rainforest or a percussive African jungle jam. This is music you can dance to in the streets. The group's rallying cry is “Joy now!” Burque denizens can sample carnival season tonight at The Dirty Bourbon Dance Hall & Saloon. If you're over 21 and hankering for a slab of modern, aural king cake, tickets to this fête are $15. Day-of-show admission jumps up another $3.
