Yosvany Terry Quintet at Outpost

By Samantha Anne Carrillo [ Thu Oct 10 2013 10:00 AM ]

Born and raised in Cuba, saxophonist, percussionist and composer Yosvany Terry immigrated to New York City in '99. Terry also incorporates the chekeré—an instrument composed of a large, hollow gourd encircled by a lacy patchwork of colored beads—which is shaken, slapped and twisted. Terry's arrival in the Big Apple coincided with a new era of experimentation and innovation in Latin jazz. An active educator and member of the jazz avant-garde, he's on tour with his quintet promoting their latest, Today's Opinion, which masterfully amalgamates West African, Cuban and American jazz rhythms and idioms. The Yosvany Terry Quintet performs in our fair city tonight at Outpost Performance Space (210 Yale SE). The all-ages gig revs up at 7:30pm sharp—no, seriously—and general admission ranges from $15 to $20. Pro-tip: If you can't make the evening concert, Terry will host a free, 50-minute mini-concert and lecture for youth and community at Outpost tomorrow at 10am.
